Big Shoulders Big Shoulders (Rounder) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
This Chicago-based quintet`s potent mixture of three overlapping styles
(the blues, R & B and bluegrass) makes its debut album as lively as an all-night jam session in a roadside honky-tonk. ”Boys, Girls and Money” and
”I Need Your Help” are rousing, blues-influenced stomps from the Chicago school. The spirit and energy of a couple of rock pioneers are invoked in ”I Got Love” (Bo Diddley) and ”Talk to Me” (Jerry Lee Lewis). A great part of the LP`s appeal comes from Big Shoulders` incorporation of the harmonica as an integral part of its sound, unlike most bands, which are content to unleash the instrument for a brief solo and then tuck it away again.
