The Wild Boyz
It Had to Be Done (Volt) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
These Oakland-based rappers, who immediately stand out from the pack by being musicians, as well as talkers, make their debut an impressive one.
”Oakland Jungle,” a short, satiric look at class differences, is cleverly told from the point of view of a guide leading a ”safari” through an urban ghetto. The next number, ”I Thought You Knew,” allows each member of the group to introduce himself and sample ”The Theme From SWAT” and Public Enemy`s ”Bring the Noise.” The Wild Boyz make a strong anti-drug statement with ”Usin (Coke Trail),” which is told from the drug`s point of view while it`s on trial for murder. ”Supa Badd!!!”, a combination of today`s drum-heavy street sound and the extended funk jams crafted 10 years ago by bands such as Dazz and Lakeside, is the standout cut.
