Glenn Branca

Symphony No. 6, ”Devil Choirs at the Gates of Hell” (Restless/Blast First)

(STAR)(STAR)(STAR)

Hailed by a small flock of followers as ”the world`s greatest living composer,” Glenn Branca is a sort of hard-core punk Hector Berlioz: a self- taught composer squeezing brash new sounds from a popular medium. Branca employs the classic rock band of drums, bass and keyboards, plus 10 electric guitars capable of emitting notes that don`t exist in traditional Western tuning. The result is deceivingly complex ”serious” music driven by a thrashing ”hard core” rhythm section-a symphony to slam to. Traditional solos and melodies are replaced by a relentless drone that swells and ebbs, accelerates and slows, while a pounding drum and persistent strumming keep the massive harmonies grounded. To some, it may sound like a thousand drivers collapsed on their car horns, but repeated listening discovers carefully crafted movements that are dramatic and lyrical.
