Severe Meniere`s disease, which causes incapacitating dizziness, has been successfully treated in five patients with a new surgical technique developed by surgeons at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Developed by Doctors Steven Millen and Glenn Meyer, the procedure involves removing a half- dollar-sized piece of bone from the skull to reach the delicate nerves that control balance and hearing. The balance nerves are carefully separated and cut. After a couple of months of increased dizziness, the balance organ in the other ear re-establishes equilibrium and the dizziness disappears. The new technique appears to be more effective and safer than other surgical procedures, the surgeons said.
