As anyone who has lived in Naperville for any length of time knows, Naperville loves a parade. In fact, there's a downtown mural dedicated to that very idea. This photo captures a scene from the Naperville Home Coming parade held in June 1917. According to Naper Settlement, the four-day event was organized to salute the town's accomplishments since its incorporation 60 years earlier. Alas, as the Settlement noted in an online account, it ended up being a bittersweet gathering as it also "served as a farewell to those young men going off" to fight in World War I, which the United States had entered just two months earlier. With temperatures expected to be in the high 80s Monday and Tuesday, what better time to look back at Naperville's Centennial Beach. This postcard photo is undated but based on the swimsuit styles for both the men and women, one of whom brought a parasol with her, it was likely taken sometime in the 1930s. That would coincide with the beach opening in 1932 and completion of the bathouse by the Works Progress Administration in 1934. Admission fees for the beach's opening year were 10 cents for children, 35 cents for adults (escalating to 50 cents on holidays), according to the history compiled by the Naperville Park District. This image shows the interior of Boecker’s Men’s Wear Store, located on the west side of Washington Street in downtown Naperville, as it appeared in 1924. Given the stock that can be seen in this photo, it was a one-stop-shop for the well-dressed man in town, carrying everything from shirts and pants to caps, ties and accessories. One countertop display reads: "Quality woolens for fine custom tailoring. They tailor better," apparently referring to wool suits. (Naperville Heritage Society)
