In August 2016, department store giant Macy's said that it plans to close 100 stores, a dramatic step that is aimed at helping the chain get ahead of a potentially crippling problem: America, they say, has too many stores for the online shopping era. Following a disappointing 2016 holiday season, it said it is eliminating more than 10,000, as well.
